Here you can cruise your houseboat from the river's mouth at the Gulf of Mexico northward into Central Florida for several miles of twisting, endless beauty. The Suwannee River is both famous and unknown... although it is relatively small, its 265 miles are navigable by craft of various sizes, depending on water levals. The first 70 miles from the mouth is quite wide, however the lower 40 miles is safe navigation for houseboats. It is a beautiful and graceful river with amazingly pristine waters with great fishing.
As you explore you will fall in love with the Suwannee. Along the way you can visit springs, historical sites, wilderness sanctuaries and even snorkel at the new underwater archeological park, "The City of Hawkensville". Manatee Springs State Park is along the way. You'll want to stop at Old Town and visit Fanning Springs State Park. Rock Bluff, Branford and Hart Springs are farther up streamand would require a smaller boat to safely ply the dark waters. You'll be traveling part of the historic route followed by confederate sternwheelers who plied the river more than a hundred years ago during the cival war. At that time its banks saw a few industrious settlers and more than a few Indians.
As you cruise, take advantage of the outstanding fishing or sit back and enjoy the scenery or whatever water sports you desire. You may spend hours without seeing another human being - just majestic ospreys on their huge nests... pelicans, great blue herons, ibises, hawks, eagles, wild razorback hogs, white-tail deer, sturgeon, cooters, gators, anhingas and much more! Houseboat and canoe rentals rentals are available as is Fishing Guide services. The town of Suwannee is located at the mouth of the Suwannee River, right on the Gulf coast approximately 2.5 hours south of Tallahassee, three hours west of Jacksonville, one hour west of Gainesville, and three hours north of the Tampa Bay area.
