River Characteristics
The name Abitibi comes from an Algonquin word that means "halfway water", a reference to the Abitibi Lake's location halfway between Hudson Bay and tribal posts on the Ottawa River. the Abitibi River's waterway is situated in the claybelt region. The river's clay bottom is the result of widespread deposits of glacial sand, gravel, and clay, which gives the water a brown tinge.

The Abitibi is one of the great tivers that flow into the Arctic tidewater of James Bay. The Missinaibi, Mattagmi, and Abitibi Rivers come together to form the Moose River. In total, the waterway is approximately 563 kilometers long and as much as a kilometer wide in some places. The last 35km of this great river system are tidal.

Fish Species
Spectacular sport fishing awaits anglers on the Abitibi River and Frederickhouse River. The fish species common to these rivers are Northern Pike, Walleye, Yellow Perch, Lake Sturgeon, Sauger, Mooneye, and Goldeye.

Historical Information
The Abitibi River flows through the Boreal Forest of Canada and was the ancient highway traveled by the Voyageurs, Coureurs De Bois, and trappers. The river was the fur trade route to James Bay and the historic route of Chevalier Pierre DeTroys in 1696. DeTroys traveled with a total of 70 canoe men, 30 colonial solders, and six officers. His party endured many obstacles on the river, such as detouring around ice, trekking long portages, shooting rapids, and repairing canoes. In ten weeks time, they were in a position to attack the Hudson Bay Company Trading Post. The attack ended successfully within half an hour.

Aboriginal ancestors of the local Cree Nation have been traced as far back as 5,000 years ago. The Cree believed that in the land they had the "gifts of the creator"; that "the waters and living things were held in trust for future generations". Authentic aboriginal grave sites, remains of 100 year old logging operations and the Island Falls Hydroelectric Dam are just some of the spectacular sights to view while on your Northern Expedition!
